Journey to the Center of the Universe

An impressive building lining the river

An impressive structure lining the river

Arriving in Bangkok completely unprepared I was thankful to meet Neil from Australia in my dorm who has been to Bangkok many times so I went out with him for the night.

After a short monorail journey we got on the river taxi heading to our destination, it was nice to see complete contrasts all the way down the river; majestic sparking gold temples opposite wooden shacks propped up by beams looking like they are on their last legs next to gigantic modern hotels sold with this river view in mind.

Things in Bangkok do seem to make a contrasting first impression in general. Most people do not seem to come away unopinionated of the place,  you either love it or hate it, fortunately for me, I seem to be in the love category.

We made it to Khao San Road aka the backpackers centre of the universe. Whilst a joke name it seemed absolutely true with an army of backpackers walking through the street for some reason, it was the most I’ve seen in one place.

Anyway, me and Neil got ourselves a bucket of alcohol each and I tried some Pad Thai (fried noodles with bean sprouts, lettuce, with optional, chicken, shrimp and egg) which I now know why it is the staple diet for expats out here. At only 30tbh (that’s 54p to my avid UK fan club) it’s not breaking the bank either! We then hit some bars and made our way back via the cheapest taxi ever. I can see why this place is so popular already.

There is a similarly unimpressive structure in KL near the KL Tower, it is like a massive Tricorn Centre :D
