Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a Canary Island just off the coast of Africa (although it is Spanish territory). I have been once before in my mid-teens and from what I remember it’s a great place to drive around with new roads, and the rest of it is mostly beaches – not much activity but great for relaxing. You will need to book flights to Lanzarote as it is an island, no land option unfortunately!

Lanzarote was formed by volcanoes, so offers spectacular scenery. If you’re wondering how many people live there, well it’s a number you can count too, as of 2010, the total is around 110,000 people. These people live of the 5 and a half million visitors a year (the amount handled by the airport) from tourism! Quite a number I’m sure you’ll agree.

One other thing Lanzarote is good for is hiking. You can climb all the peaks points over the course of a week comfortably. Many trails have been laid out for visitors to see the scenery at good points and to avoid the rough volcanic ground. However if you’re feeling adventurous and have a good pair of boots, venturing around isn’t a bad idea.

41% of the island is listed as protected by UNESCO and in 1993 the whole island was named a biosphere reserve. It is a photographers dream, I’d like to go back for this reason along, get up on those peaks and shoot and sunset/sunrise. With a year round average temperature of 20 degrees C (with little rainfall, but longer days in summer) it is popular year round to visit.

I personally wouldn’t recommend staying over a week unless you really want to do nothing (doing nothing is actually quite difficult I find though).  Otherwise Lanzarote is similar to other Canary islands – so take your pick. Or why not visit them all while you’re in the area? I’m sure island hopping is a good way to enjoy the area too.

this is sooo beautyful. I’d like to spend some holidays over there – maybe end of this year when it’s nice 25 degrees

Lanzarote is great for doing nothing as you say. Lots of tourists but they seem to hang out at the resorts or on the beach. The Island is very black due to the volcanic history and as you say a photographers dream. Take your boots, enjoy the scenerey and maybe just maybe doing nothing might be nice for a change.

I had read somewhere that the other good thing about Lanzarote is that it a very economical getaway as compared to other vacation places. Is it true?

As your read describes, Lanzarote typography would certainly be a visual delight for all shutterbugs. Also, scaling all those mountain peaks amidst natural volcanic residues would attract many hiking enthusiasts.
