Head out on the Highway

I found a smile increasing the tightness of my face the further I got away from Perth. This is the first big adventure I had set upon; driving across Australia in a 1985 Mystery Machine’d Toyota Tarago.

The sun never seemed to vary from being directly above, seldom leaving a shadow to hide away in, I spotted my first Kangaroo since being in Australia, it was beside the highway and trying to get past an impossible fence put up to stop kangaroos getting onto the highway, ironically working in reverse this time.

Hazy horizons seemed the central feature of the drive whilst the Australia bush lined the roads. Winerys and camping sites seem to dominate the attractions on route.

More miles and me and Alex swapped driving duty at Bunbury, a relatively small city south of Perth. A quick bite for lunch, and we went on our way south, passing Margaret River with plenty of sunlight hours left, we decided to settle at a place called Augusta which was marked as a whale watching area around Flinders Bay, the most south-westernly point of Australia.

Before arriving a diversion to ‘Jewel cave’ was in order, not as exciting as it sounds (there was no jewels in the cave) and with tours at limited times, we did a quick 1km walk around the place (the only thing of interest was a fallout like ladder down into the cave), and set off too Augusta.

At Flinders bay where we parked up for the night, we made our first meal out of the van; beef, baby carrots, some vegetables, noodles and an egg all mixed together to mark the end of the first day.
