Comiket Tokyo – The Definition of Busy

March 22, 2011 · 4 comments

I was told Comiket would be busy. I went on the least busiest day of the year – 31st December. Comiket is the biggest manga convention in the world (I will explain more in my next post). It is broke into 3 day summer and 3 day winter events in a feeble attempt to make it less busy, has just doubled the yearly average of 400,000 people in attendance on each long weekend.

This is a video of me walking to the entrance…

Unfortunately this video is a bit sideways so… tilt your head. But I walked accidentally down the wrong side of the queue and into an oncoming crowd that was difficult to get out of. This video is probably the best representation of just how busy it is from a first person point of view…

Comiket started in 1975 with 600 attendees. These days the 3 day event attracts over half a million people making it the biggest in the world. The biggest football and olympic stadiums struggle to hold 150,000 people, just to put that into context.

If there is something I learn about Tokyo from being there is it’s busy. Very busy. I don’t know another city like it (although I suspect certain Chinese cities may be similar). Having a huge event for free attracts huge volumes which I can’t explain in words, so I’ll finish this post with the photos…

I wouldn’t call myself a lover as I’ve not really read any. When my Japanese improves I’ll give them more of a go I think as they are quite important to the culture here.

Just too many people for me and this was suppose to be the least busiest of the days. Just amazing!

Yes, it’s almost impossible to move at the busier times, I hate to think what the summer one would be like on the first day in the morning.
