Cat City Go-Karting

I arrived by bus into Kuching (Kuching translates to Cat in English, as in the animal) next to a nice looking mosque, it would be rude not to take a picture so..

I made my way past a small open market and through the city in search for my hostel, I assume it was going to take me a good hour or so to find it, and I was in no rush as it was only 2pm or so.
I made my way past a big open area where there was a few workers laying down a wooden floor, I guess they are preparing for a festival soon here. Then I passed a big hotel and the museums which all seemed to be nicely close to each other (I visit them later). Another big garden area and I passed this strange looking place.

I made it past a school and found the cheapest can of Coca Cola in a local supermarket at 1.30RM and found my hostel which was a very clean nice place and I got the 3 bed dorm all to myself. It’s called lodge 121 and was reccomended to me by another traveller in Kota Kinabalu, I can see why now. The female member of staff gave me a useful paper map and marked out good places to eat on it as well as the best time to go.

After a quick shower I got in touch with my friend Sydney, who is Chinese-Malaysian and lived near me for a few years in the UK and I got to know through car clubs, and moved back to Kuching to get married (congratulations by the way mate!).

Sydney showed me round a bit, and we talked cars and cameras as I seem to really fancy a dSLR to record my travels now after seeing Gunnar’s photos around Sue’s house and Sydney is big into photography.

We went round Sydneys parents house and his mum gave us dinner: yam rice, tomato egg and shrimps, curried squid and a pancake pork thing, all of which was very nice.

During this time Sydney got a call from a friend, he turned to me and asked if I wanted to go go-karting, he didn’t have to ask twice. So after dinner we went out to eat as some of his friends hadn’t had dinner yet, then went on to the go-kart track.

It was pretty hot as it was indoors and there is no air conditioning inside a crash helmet! I had to borrow some shoes as sandals were not appropriate, and my helmet fitting was non existent but that didn’t bother me. We couldn’t go in our group of 8 all at once so divided into 2 groups. Most of the men in the first group, me, Sydney and the 2 girls in the second group.
After the guys finished (one poor lad was 15 and never driven before so a bit hesitant to keep up) It was our turn. I started out in front and set off as quickly as I could, but only 2 corners in and Sydney was already pressing past, I swear he had a faster kart…
Anyhow we kept on going and it was quite fast paced, and me and Sydney quickly caught up and lapped the girls who were a bit more cautious then us!

After a few more lapping of the girls me and Sydney were both pushing it a lot more, he had a big crash and I had a perfect opportunity to overtake, unfortunately at exactly the same time I also had a big crash so did not capitalise on the situation. Free’d up we carried on and I went on to have another crash on the next lap, damn these go karts, they just don’t handle well enough for the speed I want to drive them at! We got the times at the end and Sydneys fastest lap was just under 30seconds and mine was just over. The girls were lapping around the 45second mark on average so you can imagine how many times we overtook them in the 15 minute of driving time. The guys in the first group were all slower then mine and Sydneys times too, so I’ll have to settle for 2nd out of 8 for now, until next time…

If I went go-karting here (and I have seen posters for it) it would cost me something like $100 an hour hahaha!
