In Sandakan I was equipped with a local map. After gathering my bearings I was already close to a landmark: the fountain. Close by was the Sandakan Museum off a court opposite the police station so I popped in to have a look around there.

Pictured below is the Sandakan Boys school for the 1950’s era that was a photo up in the Sandakan museum:

After that to the side of the police station there is a 100 step stairs to walk up (I found about the next day in the newspaper: Someone was robbed by knifepoint here an hour after I walked it! – they are hard work walking up so it is a bad place to need to defend yourself in such a situation). Up the top of the stairs and around the corner is the English Tea House and Resturant (with English prices). Behind that was Agnes Keiths house (an American writer who wrote about her time in Sandakan during the war).

Pretty awesome information and some lovely houses!
That house is a one off, most are not like that! Agnes Keith was captured during WW2 by Japanese troops, so I’m going to keep an eye out for her book as it should be worth a read.
