One thing I have in my (in need of updating) about page explaining what this website is about, is how I raise money whilst I travel (not to boast but to help others do similar). I’ve generally ignored this part and not written much about it previously, but 3 weeks ago AdventureRob.com brought me in just over US$1000 in earnings. This was unexpected and delightfully received, as you can imagine! I now have the proof and incentive that making money online is very much possible, so I intend to make some more!
I have been doing my research and reading a lot on how it’s possible, there seems to be advice in every corner of the internet. As it turns out I was offering some myself after my recent boost. However there comes a time when you need to start acting on the advice and start doing some good work for yourself.
But whilst $1000 looks good for a weeks earnings, I don’t expect to earn any more in the month, or even quarter – seriously. I made it by selling advertising space (you can check out my awesome sponsors in the sidebar to the right, the footer and the links page) in addition to sponsored posts. But there is only so many adverts you can post before things get messy and you run out of space, and I never wanted to push my luck with that.
So the usual response/advice is to start another website and branch out onto that. However this is a lot of effort and very time consuming before it pays off. It’s taken me 18 months to get to this point, and with my 1st backpacking adventure out of the way, it’s caused a reduction in updates I do. Everything is now retro-writing about past events as there is only so much you can write about your home town before people get bored. (On the bright side, I will be venturing off somewhere else later on this year, but that’s TBA on here yet).

100 Posts – 30 days
Anyway, that aside, I’m taking a different approach to making money online and taking the hubpages challenge. This means I have to write 100 articles (roughly 700 words each is a good target) in 30 days. The money comes from adverts placed on the hubpages website. I only get to keep 60% of the earnings (the other 40% go to hubpages themselves), which sounds bad at first; but on the bright side, I get to write for one of the internets most visited website (just shy of the top 200), so there are plenty of visitors to sell advertising too.
After this is complete, and the medical treatment to my fingers required due to writing so much is finished, I will promote them and see how much I can make out of them.
It’s not all random writing though; they will be specifically picked and researched articles with high potential to earn me money. Yes it is possible to predict this, but it also requires an element of luck. However, with 100 articles, it is likely I should hit the jackpot with a couple. If this succeeds I can spend my money on more adventure holidays!
There is so many ways to make money online, I had to pick something and concentrate on it, so this is my new adventure in crafting a living by my computer and I shall keep reports on how it goes on here. The best part is it doesn’t confine me to stay in one place, so it’s perfectly possible to keep this up when travelling. I am a bit overwhelmed by this making money online thing myself but $1000 for a week’s earnings – that’s great! Curious to hear how the keyboard academy thing goes and good luck with the Hubpages thing – when I am in dire need of some cash I head on over to Demand Studios and bust out some content…

I’ve been part of TKA for a while now, but only just really ‘getting it’. So now it’s time to put it into practise and for it to pay itself back. I know they have some upcoming changes which make things even easier around September/October time. I’m still doing their older fashioned approach to help me understand it.
I’ve never checked out demand studios. Writing for money is certainly the quickest way to earn online (besides selling stuff on eBay). In theory if they can afford to pay you they are making more out of your writing though :-) Something to bare in mind.
Finding the balance is so important. When the time is right and I have attracted enough viewers my plan is to monetize my blog. But I agree with you – there’s a point at which a website can look really wonky with too many ads. I’m following sort of a cross between “Crush It” and “4-hour Work Week.” Fortunately I’m absolutely passionate about writing. It’s part of the excellent adventure I want to write – and not at all a chore.

Monetising a blog is never going to be easy. Traditionally (if blogs go back far enough to have a tradition) you have to view it as a business and constantly write evergreen content. As opposed to writing your thoughts. I try to get a balance as this site has my name in it so it gets a personal touch. I could slap Google adsense on here and I know it will make money on a few blog posts and never anything on others (something you learn with experience). But selling advertising space and sponsored posts (which I’m going to rein in the strings on and demand more interesting posts for) will work best for me.
Good luck with it Denise :-)
Good luck in the challenge . It will be a lot of work.

Awesome to hear about your advertising revenue! My goal is to sell ads for my blog as well, although my Alexa ranking took a hit this summer during my first months of pregnancy (lots of sleeping and being sick = not much time for blogging) and I haven’t been motivated yet to get back to a regular posting schedule. Hopefully this month I can get back to it and get my Alexa rank back down so I can start monetizing sometime later this year.
And along with Amiee, I write for Demand too. Has been a great source of income for me during the hectic life of grad school.

I’m not sure advertising on blogs is ever going to be enough to be honest. Not on one single blog anyway to support one person full time. As you found yourself, if you leave it then things plummet which just turns blogging into a part time job really. There seems to be an expectation for it to do so and everyone is being disappointed so alternative ideas need to be explored (hence this experiment, and I suspect some more in the future). Even if they fail they are still good so people can see what doesn’t work and if they do they need to see the effort put into it (hence my word counting).
Congrats on the baby! That’s certainly going to change your priorities with this anyway :-)
I will have to look into demand at a later date.
