A 3 hour bus ride from Kota Kinabalu with a stop to change clothes and admire the view and you will be with bus load of people finding your way to Padas River.

Once there you will be told to sit down on planks of wood with wheels/ball bearings on for riding down a train track, think along the lines of ‘railway skateboarding’.

Kota Kinabalu (named after Mount Kinabalu) was previously known as Jesselton (name change in 1968) was mostly destroyed during WW2, although took over from Sandakan as the state capital after it. Fort Margherita is across the Kuching river further up from the Astana, I got a boat today across the river to have a look.

I crossed the river to see the Astana in Kuching. Little did I know this isn’t actually a tourist attraction as it is only open once a year to the public.
