You may be wondering who’s interested in publishing what you’ve written about your adventures. There are hundreds of potential markets and publishers so I have suggested 10 here. Make sure you have a good story in your well written article and you should find one of these publications happy to work with it.

Travel Writer
With 8 magazines published annually with a reach of circa 340,000 people, Backpacker magazine aims at the hiking market. It primarily aims at North American desinations although foreign articles are accepted. If you’ve been hiking through this part of the world, send your creative writing to the appropriate editor:

InsideOut magazine aims itself at independent travellers from first time backpackers to full time nomads. It’s bimonthly publication typically features ‘Briefs and Tips’, ‘Just the Facts’, Destination stories, How to teach and learn languages abroad, Health on the road, and ‘When in Home’. Hackwriters publishes a large variety of writing on its monthly online magazine and have a dedicated section to travel related writing if it is analytical or questioning in nature. They are based in an acedemic instituion, have been running for 10 years and linked to the Creative Writing MA from the University of Portsmouth, which as it turns out is the uni which awarded me my electronics degree.

Sunset Magazine is Western America’s largest circulating publication with over 1 million subscribers covering 14 Western states. They want ‘take action’ travel writing from freelancers aimed at their markets which is 70% female. Destinations that have multiple activies for ‘soft’ adventure is also preferred.

Wanderlust Magazine is British based and publishes 8 times annually. They look for high quality writing in the categories of destination features, wanderlust weekends, dispatches (short and topical), short crazy stories, travel blueprints (mini guide), special interest and consumer guides. They don’t want high budget stories.

Transitions Abroad is the monthly online magazine which has 600,000 monthly visitors. Their requirements divide into Cultural travel, Working Travel, Living Abroad and Student Travel. They don’t want destination or guidebook style writing. They do want inspiring first hand experience which focuses on culture and people.

BootsnAll is a popular website which publishes all manners of travel related articles to it’s 1.5 million monthly visitors. Itinerary suggestion? Adventurous story? How to guide? It’s all here.

Brave New Traveler is part of the Matador Network of travel sites and focuses on edgy articles which drive attention and provokes reactions; destination stories are not the norm, individual thoughts and opinions are.

Travelers Tales authors books made from submitted travel stories. Their requirments regularly change according to the type of book they are publishing next, so be sure to check their website for the latest news.

Outside Magazine is a nationally published monthly magazine in the USA. They particularly look for articles on outdoor events, regions, and activities; informative seasonal service pieces, sports and adventure travel pieces, profiles of engaging outdoor characters, and investigative stories on environmental issues.
- Mail queries with SAE and examples to: Editorial Department, Outside magazine, 400 Market St., Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87501.
Don’t forget to check your work before submitting to make a good first impression, and make sure the market is appropriate for your writing. A hiking magazine in the US is not going to be interested in your piece about rallying across Africa on a motorbike, no matter how well written it is. Good luck! Awesome, thanks for the info! I LOVE Wanderlust…I bought one of their magazines last year because it featured Newfoundland. Unfortunately, it cost me an arm and a leg. Hahaha.
