The Mystery Machine

December 6, 2009 · 29 comments

Finally, after months in Perth, I am ready to set off across the outback to Eastern Australia. I will be taking the southern route via a camper van I own (as oppose to rent) at my own pace with the intention to bring in 2010 on Harbour Bridge in Sydney watching the fireworks over the Opera House. I won’t be tackling it alone, I have my travel partner Alex accompanying me, who I’m sure will be a great asset for tackling a desert with.

Anyway! It is time to reveal my camper van to the world, it’s already done a few rounds in Australia so a veteran at this game, I figured it would be easier to take a video (presented by yours truely) rather than shoot photos and write about it, but as it turns out, getting a video right takes a lot of thought, direction and editing, so I’m not sure if I’ll be doing much more in the future, depends what sort of reception this gets. Enough with the blabbing on, here is The Mystery Machine:

Apologies for video quality, I’m pretty sure that’s all YouTube’s fault though.

Ready for action!

Hi Rob, I like your Mystery Machine, we are also traveling in the east coast of Australia; our van is Milky Way.
For me traveling by camper van is the best.
Take care

DAMN I can’t wait to hear about this adventure. This is definitely the way to travel, I love it. I think the video thing rocks.

Lol @ the kangaroo thing…and the spider spray makes me never want to come to Australia.

Thanks Candice :-) I was thinking of doing a few videos on the move across Australia, but from how this one took to do (over 50 takes to get that believe it or not) I’m not so sure.

I’m going to use a can of deordorant and a lighter on any spiders that come close I think… just to be sure.

Really? Ouch. Why 50?

Aimee – someone has to do it – live the dream whilst you’re still young and good looking!

Candice – 50 because I suck at presenting videos, using wrong words and numbers. Am seriously considering an outtake video though if I can learn how to bind some videos together and edit them.

Hey Rob – camper van looks great. I’m going to be doing a similar thing around Australia next year and was wondering what kind of price you paid for the van?

Best of luck with your journey!

What a great way to strike up conversation with other travelers!

Moonbadger February 1, 2010 at 9:38 AM

Great vehicle, i especially like the big can of spider repellant. Essential traveling gear

AdventureRob February 2, 2010 at 4:13 AM

David – Got the van cheap, but it needed some repairs and registration, so totalling that you’re looking at about $3500-4000

Heather – It’s good for striking up conversation with anyone to be honest :-) Have people always asking for photos of it.

Moonbadger – I was actually lucky and never had to use the spider spray in the end :-) There is still time though in the 2nd trip I shall be doing in it later.

I liked Scooby Doo as a kid but I really can’t tell you much about it, I wouldn’t say I love it, but it’s certainly an awesome theme to base a campervan around :-)

Dude you have the coolest camper van i ever did see!

Mark Jamieson March 27, 2011 at 11:46 AM

Hi Mate, stubbled across your website whilst surfing the web. Just thought I’d let you know that me and my girlfriend at the time bought this van when we were travelling Oz in 2005/6. It was plain white and she was a big scooby doo fan, so we painted it up. Had a great time in it. Good to see it was still on the road a year ago.

Hope your travels in it went well.

AdventureRob March 29, 2011 at 3:08 AM

Awesome, thanks very much for photos. It’s nice to see it’s origins! As it has quite a high turnover there is a few owners who have scribbled their names on it now over the past 5 years.
