Day 4 and time to leave the golden beaches, calm town and warm waters of Esperance for the sun scorched outback, lacking everything except flies and annoyance.
The hotter it gets the more flies there appears to be, if the 48 degree heat wasn’t enough the flies are experts at pissing off anyone, even Mother Teresa and Ghandi would flip out here.
Approaching more in land there seems to be an increase in tyre blow outs too, with bits of curved rubber everywhere.
We stopped in Norseman, where there is nothing except a cockney guy running a petrol station, giving the same warnings and advice out to everyone about to drive the Nullarbor.
Ending the day in Baladonia, just before the Nullarbor straight – longest straight road in Australia, we parked up in a camp spot next to a fuel station and watched a movie as a thunderstorm headed in our direction.

Heading into the outback now? Stray kangaroos…Wow that’s a strange thought. Here we have to watch out for stray deers, cows, alligators, etc., but I can’t imagine what it must be like to run into a kangaroo crossing the road… o_O
That Beach looks fantastic great stuff :-)
You got Interent access at Belladona to post this ??? I don’t think so LOL – having been there and even to the Eyre Bird observatory – infact we drove Perth/Adelaide last Xmas and even had mild temps (mid 20s) and rain on the plain!

Jenn – it’s quite common in Australia, and kangaroos can be big boys causing lots of damage!
Lis – Ha no, this isn’t a live trip, I’ve done it now, I spread my posts out to compensate for the boring periods when I’m not doing things that are interesting. Monday is the Nullarbor post ;-)
Thanks for comments everyone!
The photos, thanks for sharing. I’ve heard the flies in Australia are treacherous. I wonder how they compare to African flies? I have yet to visit either of these continents. Maybe this year…

Wow-that top picture is so beautiful. Hope you stayed clear of those stray kangeroos!
BCOT – I imagine flies are pretty bad anywhere hot in the world to be honest, be interesting to compare ‘fly badness of continents’ though :-)
Nancy – Thanks! I was lucky enough to avoid kangaroos on this trip, but there is plenty of dead ones lining the road
Hi Rob,
for flies we have a solution: we recently bought an insecticide made by 100%DDT, it is more expensive then a “normal one” but we dilute it with water or alcohol using only 15% of insecticide, one application last for at least 4 hours and for me the best insect repellent we used so far .
I can’t even imagine leaving the beauty of the beach behind. The outback sounds like such a great idea until you actually contemplate how it really is there. Amazing that anyone calls that area home. thanks for your posts.
