What’s for dinner? Cat?

Dropped off in down town Kuching by Sydney (he had to go on a business trip to KL), it was time for a bit of breakfast, offering free wifi (and an electrical socket) I couldn’t resist the first place I came across serving chicken and egg in a bun:

Sydney told me there is a photography shop across the city in India Street so I headed in that direction afterwards (a side of Kuching I had yet to venture too).
I passed one of the Kuching cat statues on route:

Kuching is strange in their emphasis on cats yet I often spend days without seeing one here, ironically there is a few dogs around still. Sydney told me it was because the Chinese don’t like cats and there is a big Chinese population here.

Further down and looking across the river the government building stands out from the crowd, it’s modern Islamic structure taking pride of place on the riverfront.

Turning off the from the waterfront the stunning colonial post office next to the Courthouse complex give a nice taste to the dated buildings built in the 1870s:

India street was just around the corner from here and features similar colonial architecture. A few shops down here mainly consisting of souvenirs. I went in the camera shop and was unimpressed by the price of the camera I am after so belly rumbling I looked for food and came across a place selling chicken:

I found cat statue 2 of out 3 wondering around back and headed back to the hostel to relax a bit and have a much needed shower.
For some reason one thing I always pay attention to in cities is the drain covers, I think they say a lot about a city and its history, I think this habit came after visiting Rome a couple of years back and learning about the drains there from a tour guide. Anyway most of Kuching has boring drains, but I did find a road with what I was actually expecting to see, yes that’s right… cats:

It was then time for dinner.

Can you guess what I had?

If you said cat then -100 points for you

If you said KFC then -10 points for you

If you said chicken then +10 points for you

If you said honey roasted chicken with salad then +30 points for you:

I said KFC chicken so I guess 0 points for me!

The government building looks awesome, hard to tell the scale from such a distance!

0 points well done you! (In a QI sort of way)

That building didn’t seem very welcoming to visitors nearby, but it’s admirable from a distance.

Rob,

I like the way you take as many pictures of your different meals as well as your travels. But KFC isn’t a very exotic food?

It’s not exotic at all! But someday you just need a KFC, or 2.

i guessed cat..hahaha
anyways, perhaps they housed all their cats because they value them so much that’s why you can’t see them on the streets…

Strange! I mean many countries have statues of animals, but the cat does not fit with a national icon. Or does it? Perhaps they are not widly represented so the city has a fascination with them. I like to know the history.

It’s only a Kuching thing, (Kuching translates to cat!) not a Malaysian thing. I’m not sure why, but it would be interesting. Maybe it has something to do with when the British colonised the area.
